Trees at Springvale Park
Springvale Park is a large area of sportsfields in Wanganui. There is little shade in summer or protection from the weather in winter for players and supporters. There were a few trees around the perimeter but many more were required. Club Member Shirley McDouall kicked the tree planting project off with a generous donation. Negotiation with the Wanganui District Council resulted in a major planting programme for the park. The plan had become quite a large project so the other Rotary Clubs in Wanganui were asked for assistance and the project became a combined clubs project. The Council specified very substantial frames around the tress to protect them from vandalism and accidental damgage. The frames were costing more than the trees and although club funding was provided, substantial funds have been provided by the Eleanor Burgess Trust in Wanganui.

In 2009 the first trees were planted: oaks and gums along the boundary and nuts behind the Stadium. In 2010 further oaks and gums were planted and pohutakawas near the entrance to the park. Planting will continue for two or three more years until the park boundaries are completed.
